Case Study

Laying the Groundwork

The project began with a detailed assessment of the existing roof and its performance. Preparation included:

  • Conducting a roof condition survey to review the thermal efficiency.
  • Carrying out pull-out tests to confirm the existing deck could support the required fixings.
  • Developing a site-specific health and safety plan in line with HSE and client standards.
  • Completing windload calculations to ensure the correct number and placement of fixings.

A full roof survey report recommended overlaying the existing 600 m² roof to restore its waterproofing.

Collaboration That Made the Difference

Working within a hospital environment required strict attention to safety and coordination. With 24/7 operations ongoing, access was limited to a single entry point and a designated supply zone.

Scaffolding was installed around the building, with a specialised configuration to protect vertical rooflights and mitigate fall risks. Close collaboration with the Trust ensured the works were planned and delivered to minimise disruption and control costs while securing long-term performance.

Scope of Works

  • Prepared the roof by removing loose chippings and mechanically fixing insulation.
  • Installed TremVap AVCL over the smoothed surface.
  • Applied a liquid roof solution across the 600 m² roof area.
  • Installed a drip edge angle to aid water flow down the mansard.
  • Detailed multiple penetrations seamlessly, supported by the self-terminating properties of the system.

Overcoming Challenges

This refurbishment came with several constraints:

  • Extending the roof’s lifespan without removing the existing system.
  • Live hospital environment requiring careful planning to avoid disruption to patients and staff.
  • Busy hospital location meaning material deliveries had to be precisely coordinated.
  • Limited access points and designated supply areas.
  • Ensuring safety around vertical rooflights with customised scaffolding.

How We Delivered

The works were completed using the AlphaGuard PUMA Liquid Applied Flat Roofing System, chosen for its durability and flexibility:

  • Fast curing in both low and high temperatures.
  • Seamless application around roof detailing.
  • Certified with Broof(t4) fire classification.

The system’s ease of installation made the process efficient, even with penetrations and complex detailing across the roof area.

The Outcome

The project was completed in just three weeks, minimising disruption to hospital operations. Key results included:

  • A fully waterproofed roof with a 25-year manufacturer and AAC-backed warranty.
  • Improved thermal efficiency and protection from leaks.
  • A modern, seamless, long-term waterproofing solution.
  • Extended roof service life without removing the existing system.
  • Completed works with no disruption to hospital operations.
