Case Study

Establishing the Project Foundations

AAC Flat Roofing began the project with a full review of the client’s needs and the condition of the existing asphalt roof.

  • Assessing the asphalt surface to confirm its suitability for the Protan vacuum membrane.
  • Identifying the advantages of the open layout and minimal rooftop obstructions.
  • Securing a full Protan installation specification based on the building’s requirements.

These steps shaped a clear starting point and supported an efficient installation process.

Working Hand-in-Hand With the Client

Our long-standing relationship with the office furniture manufacturer supported clear communication from the start. When the team invited us to refurbish the roof on one of their Merseyside buildings, AAC worked alongside them to review the most effective approach.

Through this collaboration, we agreed that the Protan vacuum membrane system would offer strong durability while helping reduce disruption to day-to-day factory activity.

Project Scope & Technical Approach

  • Preparing the existing asphalt roof surface to create a suitable base for the Protan vacuum installation.
  • Installing Protan’s single-ply vacuum membrane with carefully positioned vacuum vents across the roof.
  • Forming airtight perimeter seals to maintain the negative pressure required for system performance.
  • Providing an AAC maintenance package to support the Protan system throughout its lifecycle.

Challenges & Considerations On-Site

Although the roof was suited for a vacuum installation, several points needed focused planning:

  • Working without mechanical fixings or adhesives required precise perimeter detailing to maintain airtight performance.
  • Positioning the vacuum vents correctly to achieve consistent wind-driven negative pressure across the roof.
  • Keeping disruption to a minimum on a busy and fully operational manufacturing site.

AAC’s Solution & Expertise in Action

  • Selecting the Protan Vacuum System to avoid drilling into the solid deck or spreading adhesives.
  • Completing the installation faster than conventional methods, helping reduce disruption to the client’s workforce.
  • Applying strict quality-control checks to ensure the membrane, vents, and perimeter seals worked exactly as intended.

Results That Deliver Long-Term Value

The completed Protan Vacuum roof offers a secure finish that becomes even stronger as wind speeds increase, thanks to the system’s negative-pressure design.

  • A durable installation completed with minimal disruption to daily operations.
  • A 20-year Protan warranty supported by an AAC maintenance package.
  • Confidence that the roof is prepared for long-term performance using an advanced membrane system.
