Roof Waterproofing System
challenge
Situated on the edge of Manchester’s city centre with views over Seymour Park towards the city, this sixteen storey apartment building provides external terrace areas at seven different levels, together with 65 external balconies.

our approach
We were pleased to be invited to supply and install the necessary waterproofing to roof areas and balconies, and were able to carry out the works efficiently through close co-ordination with our Developer client.
The roof waterproofing system was specified as Protan, and although the 820 square metres of terraces are paved with concrete flags they are still required to drain rainwater away. We therefore installed a bespoke-design tapered insulation scheme laid onto the flat concrete deck, and creating falls to the outlets. Stone ballast was applied to another 120m2 of roof area.
Two maintenance-access only roof areas amounting to a further 200m2 were formed on timber decks and these too were waterproofed with Protan single-ply membrane and thermal insulation.

the result
In addition to the flat roof terrace areas covered with Protan single-ply membrane waterproofing, the building contains 65 individual apartment external balconies.
We applied proprietary liquid waterproofing to each of these prior to the finished hard-surfacing for the residents external use. Providing a variety of outdoor space to be enjoyed by the residents.
Through our close collaboration with the developers, builders, and property owners, we were able to deliver a high-quality and visually pleasing roof areas
Our work was independently verified by an electronic integrity tests to ensure that the roof is fully waterproof before being signed off by the membrane manufacturer.
On completion, the project comes with a 20-year guarantee
As an additional service to our developer clients, we also arranged an Insurance Backed Guarantee for the project although we are not FSA-approved and do not profit from selling it
